When it comes to youth baseball motivation, I get asked "How To Encourage Ballplayer's Development While Keeping Perspective" from time to time.
Here's my response, especially to young ballplayers...
Youth baseball motivation #1
If I told you that you could play in the big leagues but you could only get there after turning 25, would you say deal or no deal?
Deal, right? That's a no brainer.
So why is that we think we need to be the next Mike Trout or Altuve at 13 years old?
This would happen often - we would draft a young 18 yr old stud for the Blue Jays. In his first year of Rookie ball, he'd pop his first 0-20, and then he'd looked like someone just ran over his dog.
Here's what I would tell him.
"Bro! You're 18!!!!"
Same spiel. "Big leagues at 25??"
He'd shake his head yes.
When he realizes he has another 7 YEARS to get better, today's bad game or yesterday's 0-4 doesn't really mean anything!
Now he plays with freedom.
Players, we have to keep perspective.
Everyone wants to get in the microwave. No one wants to be in the oven.
Being a good ballplayer is a slow cook.
In short, I didn't start my SR year in high school. I got cut my freshman year in college. I played in the big leagues.
Youth baseball motivation #2
YOU - NEVER - KNOW - WHO'S - WATCHING.
I promise you, there's time.
Get bigger, faster, stronger.
Work on your mental game.
Watch baseball on TV like a player, not a fan.
Master hunting pitches.
Most of all, get great at competing with 100% confidence.

If you're playing summer ball, and you're not playing every game like it's opening day, I guarantee you, you're throwing away at-bats.
Above all, let's make sure the right guy is playing.
Also - let's make sure Confident-Player is showing up to the field.
